Vascular Sonographer II (Per Diem, Float)

At NorthBay Health the Vascular Sonographer is a registered Vascular Sonographer with demonstrated clinical expertise. The Vascular Sonographer is responsible and accountable for the delivery of all cardiology service modalities according to the Heart and Vascular Center. The Vascular Sonographer works collaboratively with the healthcare providers ensuring that high quality, cost effective care is provided to all patients under this service by acting as a clinical resource, monitoring standards of practice and patient outcomes; patient satisfaction; and adherence to departmental policies, procedures and guidelines. 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinic Practice / Patient Care

  1. Provides direct patient care relative to the department organizational policies and procedures, which may include but are not limited to: vascular studies, etc. Documents data in the electronic record base (ex: CPACS, Cerner). 

  2. Instructs and assists the patient in preparation for testing and/or procedures according to the needs of the patient population. Maintains patient privacy at all times.

  3. Continually monitors and observes the patient during testing and/or procedure and notifies the physician immediately if needed.

  4. Performs upper and lower extremity duplex and Doppler studies

  5. Performs Carotid Doppler and Duplex studies

  6. Performs abdominal aortic duplex and Doppler studies

  7. Assist physician with Venous procedures

  8. Recognizes vascular pathologies

  9. Responsible for evaluating each study to ensure it meets required quality standards.

  10. Prepares reports for physicians.

  11. Maintains equipment as required and according to manufacturer guidelines. 

  12. Reports equipment failure according to department policy, tagging equipment, notifying BioMed and department director and/or designee.

  13. Inspects and cleans equipment prior to each patient use.

  14. Utilizes the electronic health record for message taking, input of data for patient visit, etc.

  15. Maintains current knowledge and skill related to vascular ultrasound testing, procedures, etc.

  16. Develops Health Education material for various testing and procedures specific to ultrasound.

  17. Coordinates scheduling of diagnostics studies.

  18. Communicates with the treating physician to request specific health information and/or to provide an update of a patient’s health care status.

  19. Follows Infection Control guidelines and standards.

  20. Utilizes informed consent as needed for treatments and/or procedures.

  21. Utilizes the paper chart during down time procedures.

  22. Integrates evidence based practice strategies to guide practice decisions and to develop policies, procedures, guidelines and standards for various ultrasound modalities used in patient testing.

  23. Keeps current in medical diagnostic sonography practice through continuing education pertinent to the clinical specialty and disseminates information to appropriate team members; specifically, vascular medicine.

  24. Ensures that authorization is obtained prior to any vascular procedure.

  25. Participates in policy development, review, and revision specific to ultrasound.

  26. Communicates and collaborates with other departments to provide continuity of care across departments and disciplines.

  27. Presents a professional demeanor in appearance and attitude.

  28. Maintains conditions of employment within time frame (flu, tuberculin skin test, corporate safety modules, respirator fit).

  29. Assists the Director or Supervisor as needed for various assignments and/or projects.

  30. Provides in-services to staff based on identified learning needs as assigned.

  31. Assists healthcare provider and/or performs procedures in assigned area within scope of practice.

  32. Actively participates in committees, in-services, skills fair, staff meetings, Performance Improvement (PI) activities and standards development. 

  33. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education:  High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Licensure: Current certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or as a Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) required.

Experience:  2 years of Vascular experience in an inpatient or outpatient setting preferred.

Skills:  Current AHA or equivalent BLS certification required. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.  Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in vascular ultrasound. Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Young Adult, Adult and Geriatric. Knowledge of medical terminology required, Knowledge of office equipment and basic computer skills required (fax, multi-line phone, copier/scanner). Knowledge of Cerner desirable. Knowledge of an electronic health record required. Strong knowledge of regulatory and professional standards in areas of responsibility.

Requires frequent use of telephone, writing, and computer keyboard six or more hours each day. Requires walking, stooping, bending, twisting and squatting occasionally up to 6 hours or more each day.  Moderate physical activity including ability to assist patients from sitting to standing or sitting to lying (or reversed).

 Hours of Work:  Monday - Friday, 0800-1700, times/days may vary based on clinic need
