Physician, Hematology & Medical Oncology

NorthBay Health Vacaville, CA (Onsite) Full-Time

NorthBay Health is seeking a physician board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology to join a highly esteemed team of practitioners in Northern California. We are situated between the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa Valley, and Sacramento. It is an ideal location for both personal and professional growth, with a strong emphasis on work-life balance.

The physician will be expected to provide state-of-the-art care to a broad range of community patients to include new patient consultations and ongoing follow up care. They will have a robust support staff that includes medical assistants, nurse navigators, and on-site oncology nutritional support counseling, social services, and remote access to oncology genetic counseling. There are active tumor boards.

The Cancer Center is an ACOS certified comprehensive community cancer center and provides services to two hospitals in adjacent communities supported by full hospitalist services with inpatient chemotherapy only at the adjacent VacaValley Hospital. A full spectrum of solid tumor types are treated as well as both benign and malignant hematology to include aggressive lymphomas and acute leukemia’s. There is an active clinical trial program in place. There is a connected Infusion Center with 12 stations and 2 private rooms and is staffed by a very experienced nursing staff that are oncology certified. 

Radiation Oncology is also on-site with Varian Tru-Beam and experienced team. Prostate brachytherapy.

Position Overview

Schedule: 36 hours of patient facing + 4 hours of indirect patient care

5 days per week (with 1 day of telehealth optional) and 7 days with one weekend on-call per month (covering both hospitals for new consultations and evening cross coverage and night calls). 

Average patient load is 1-2 new patients per day and 12 follow up patients. 

Inpatient census varies – own patients rounded on by provider, night coverage for all patients

Team Support:

  • Individual medical assistants, shared nurse navigators, oncology social services and registered dietician available on-site part time. Board certified on-site cancer center pharmacy and on-site specialty pharmacy are available for consultation and support. 
  • Onsite PET/CT, mammography, bone density, ultrasound, diagnostic CT, spectrum of routine radiology.
  • Adjacent medical fitness center.

Practice setting: Outpatient practice with adjacent inpatient oncology hospital, second hospital covered in adjacent community. 

Key Responsibilities:

Patient care: Diagnose, treat, and manage adult patients with a full spectrum of both benign and malignant conditions including solid tumors, benign hematology (clotting disorders, anemia, cytopenias, sickle cell, etc.) and malignant hematology (acute and chronic leukemia’s, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, myeloproliferative disorders, etc.). Typical referrals are about 2/3 hematology and 1/3 oncology.

Treatment plans: Develop individualized treatment regimens, utilizing tumor boards, clinical trials, and collaboration with the team of dedicated physicians. Modalities include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, and regional referral for transplant and CAR-T support.

Collaborative care: Active tumor boards for coordination of care with other specialists to include diagnostic imaging, pathology, surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, palliative care, nurse practitioners, and clinical trial team members

Infusion therapy: Oversee the administration of chemotherapy, transfusion therapy, immunotherapy, and other biologics in the adjacent infusion center.

Clinical Trials: Multiple clinical trials are available with active IRB. Enrollment is encouraged to offer patients cutting-edge treatment options.

Education: Educate patients and their families on diagnosis, treatment options, and potential adverse effects of their treatment while providing ongoing emotional support.

Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.

Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all care complies with industry standards, including those established by the NCCN, ASCO, and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications: 

  • Education: MD or DO degree
  • Certification: Board-certified or board-eligible in Hematology and Oncology
  • Licensure: Valid medical license to practice in California
  • Experience: Proven experience in hematology/oncology, with expertise in the diagnosis and management of both hematologic malignancies and solid tumors
  • Skills: Strong diagnostic, clinical, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide compassionate care
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and a diverse medical team
